5 Interesting Facts About Green Tree Ants

Today I want to write about a little ant that I’ve seen a lot during my holiday in Port Douglas.

Here are five interesting facts about them:

1. These cute little ants grow up to 1 cm long.  They have two different kinds of workers and each colony can have more than one queen.
2. Green tree ants can often be seen in long trails.  They have a painful bite and can squirt acid from their abdomen.  They hunt a wide range of insects, often much larger than themselves.
3. They also milk some species of caterpillars for a sweet secretion.
4. They are also known as weaver ants as they have the ability to weave leaves together to build their nests.  To do so, they squeeze their larvae, which produce a silk which holds the leaves in place.
5. Green tree ants are found in the forests of northern Australia and throughout south east Asia.  In Australia, they are green, but in Asia, they are red.
