5 Interesting Facts About Chamois

Here is a chamois looking out for predators

Today I want to write about a beautiful animal called the chamois.

Here are five interesting facts about them:

  1. These cute looking members of the goat-antelope family grow up to 130 cm long.  Their small horns grow about 20 cm long.  Their name is pronounced “shamwa.”
  2. Chamois live in very high mountain ranges and are very well suited to their environment, with a long coat in winter and padded hooves that give them excellent grip on slippery, steep slopes.
  3. They are very fast runners and amazing jumpers and can jump up to 2 metres high and 6 metres long when escaping predators such as wolves, lynx, foxes and eagles.
  4. Females live in small groups of 15-30 animals, which includes their young.  The males live by themselves until joining the group just before the breeding season (called the rut) starts.
  5. Chamois are quite common and live in the mountains of Turkey, Italy, Romania, Switzerland and Austria.  They have also been introduced to the south island of New Zealand.

I hope that you found these facts interesting and learned something new.
