5 Interesting Facts About Mainland Tiger Snakes

Today is my birthday.  I really like tigers and reptiles, so today I am writing about mainland tiger snakes.

Here are five interesting facts about them:

1. These beautiful snakes grow up to 1.6 metres long.
2. Mainland tiger snakes come in a wide range of colours.  On some of the darker snakes, the tiger stripes that give them their name are not always able to be seen.  They also have a flattened head like a cobra that they use to scare away threats.
3. They are extremely venomous and used to be responsible for more human fatalities in Australia than any other snake.  They mainly eat frogs, but also eat small lizards, mammals, birds and fish.
4. They don’t lay eggs, but give birth to about 20-30 live young.
5. Mainland tiger snakes are very common and live in swamps and rivers and are found throughout southeastern Australia.  They are very good swimmers.
