Asiatic Black Bear

This is the 300th post on this blog, so I want to write about a really iconic species, the Asiatic black bear.

Here are five interesting facts about them:

  1. These beautiful bears grow up to 1.9 metres long and can weight up to 135 kg.
  2. They are excellent climbers and spend up to half their time in trees, where they sleep, eat, escape from enemies and even hibernate.
  3. Like many other species of bear, Asiatic black bears are omnivores and eat a wide range of food, including termites, ants, beetle larvae, nuts, berries, fruits, grains, eggs, honey and occasionally larger prey.
  4. At breeding time, the females give birth to 1-4 cubs during their winter hibernation.  The cubs live with their mother for the first 3 years of their lives.
  5. Asiatic black bears are found in forests throughout Asia from Afghanistan to Taiwan, throughout north eastern China, far eastern Russia and Japan.  They are considered vulnerable to extinction due to habitat loss and hunting.

I hope that you found these facts interesting and learned something new.

Are there any other interesting facts that you would like to share about Asiatic black bears?

  1. These facts were really interesting, thanks for sharing! The first thing we learned was that the Asiatic bear is even a species, we had never heard of it. Another new thing we learned was that they can hibernate in trees–wow! We like all the science words you used, we have been learning about the life cycle in class and know all about the larvae they eat. Thanks for sharing so many neat things on your blog, especially the pictures and extra links.
